General Motors Chevrolet Volt 2012

General Motors is about to release the Chevrolet Volt, its entry in the electric car sweepstakes. Earlier this week, as the accompanying video shows, I had an opportunity to drive a Volt from New York to Pittsburgh, and to talk with General Motors staffers about the car along the away.

For reviews of the quality of the Volt's pickup and torque you'll have to go to the car blogs. But here's my metaphysical assessment: it's a non-revolutionary revolutionary vehicle.

Saudi Arabia unveils 1st domestically made car Ghazal

planned production will be 20,000 vehicles per year.

The desert kingdom whose oil reserves help fuel the world has developed its first car — an SUV that named after nimble desert deer found in Saudi Arabia.
The Ghazal 1, the product of at least two years of work at the country's King Saud University, was unveiled Monday night by King Abdullah at a ceremony at the King Saud University.
The rugged vehicle is intended to match the kingdom's tough terrain.
Higher Education Minister Khaled al-Anqary said the vehicle was proof that Saudi youth, given the right resources and opportunities, are "able to realize aspirations and excel."
The vehicle's costs have not been disclosed, and no announcement was made about when, or if, Saudi Arabia will set up a production plant to build the sports utility vehicle.
Said Darwish, a professor at KSU's industrial engineering department, was quoted by the Saudi-based Arab News as saying planned production will be 20,000 vehicles per year.
King Abdullah, who has ruled the oil-rich nation for five years, has made education a key priority and has stressed the need for greater employment opportunities for young Saudis. Like many of the other oil-rich Gulf nations, expatriate workers play key roles in the country's economy and fill jobs ranging from janitors to professors and bankers.
Saudi Arabia, home to the world's largest proven reserves of crude, last year set up a new coed, postgraduate science and technology university believed to have cost billions of dollars.
The university, intended as a world class research institution, however drew quick criticism from conservatives in the deeply religious Islamic nation who have objected to, among other things, men and women studying together.

ALTHOUGH Saudi Arabia is still the largest car importer in the region with an estimated 777,000 cars at the end of 2013, there are indications that car manufacturers are keen to start some local operations in order to make use of abundant energy and support industries.
As of 2017, cars made in Saudi Arabia could be in the market.
The Saudi government is encouraging this trend through the National Clusters Development Program, which includes attracting carmakers to come and invest in the Kingdom.
The response is encouraging with Jaguar Land Rover signing a preliminary agreement with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to build a plant to produce 50,000 Land Rovers a year as of 2017.
Other companies have expressed interest in local manufacturing operations including Ford, GM and Chrysler and are in talks with the ministry.
There are a number of comparative advantages for Saudi Arabia including the availability of cheap land and energy and the existence of support companies that provide materials to the car industry. Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) is a world leader in polymers and plastics, a material increasingly used by the carmakers.
Also, Alcoa is working on a mega plant to produce aluminum in Saudi Arabia at an investment cost of $10.8 billion.
This plant is the carrot that convinced Land Rover that Saudi Arabia is the best location for manufacturing new Land Rovers with aluminum body shells.
At the moment there is a small Isuzu truck assembly plant in Dammam.
There are also a number of factories which produce spare parts and lubricants for cars.
These support plants are vital in developing local car assembly plants.
It is hoped that major exporters to the Saudi market, such as Toyota and Hyundai, would also consider setting up a local manufacturing base in order to keep their edge in the long run.

GM Great Performance February-2010 GM-Buick Regal

General Motors posted an 11.5% increase in February US sales, the automaker said today.

The results came hours after GM announced it will recall 1.3 million cars in North America over a potentially faulty power steering motor following a federal probe into the problem in January.

GM, like most other automakers, was expected to see a sales gain in February in the wake of a series of mass recalls at Japanese rival Toyota.

DETROIT -Automakers plowed through a snowy February to better-than-expected sales, and new incentives led by beleaguered Toyota will keep the momentum going into spring.
Despite some analysts' predictions of single-digit gains, sales rose 13 percent over last February and all major automakers but Toyota Motor Corp. reported higher U.S. sales. Most took customers from the Japanese automaker, which has been struggling with a series of massive safety recalls. Toyota's U.S. market share fell to 12.8 percent, its lowest level since July 2005, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank.
Ford's sales shot up 43 percent and the automaker outsold GM for the first time since August 1998, when GM was in the midst of a strike. Ford's gains were led by cars, which rose 54 percent, with sales of the midsize Fusion, a Toyota Camry rival, more than doubling. Those results included Volvo, which Ford is preparing to sell.
"We feel we're getting our fair share of the Toyota business," said Susan Docherty, who was head of sales and marketing at GM until Tuesday afternoon, when she was moved into solely a marketing role. GM's sales rose nearly 12 percent.
Even though Toyota's sales dropped, the company did better than many analysts predicted, said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and analysis at TrueCar.com, an auto pricing site. He suspects incentives aren't the only reason, because they weren't high enough to attract customers worried about safety.
"This tells me that Toyota's brand strength and loyalty was far stronger than most of us thought," he said.
Automakers were expecting to see gains over February 2009, which was one of the weakest months in a very depressed year. Still, winter storms at the beginning and end of the month hurt sales. GM said its sales dropped 22 percent in the Northeast region.
"It's hard to get enthusiastic about going out and looking for a new car when you have to shovel out," said Raymond Ciccolo, president of Village Auto Group, which owns seven franchises in the Boston area.
GM sales analyst Mike DiGiovanni said sales probably would have been 5 percent higher had it not been for snowstorms. That means the gradual economic recovery is continuing despite setbacks in home sales, new home construction and unemployment, he said.
GM's sales of its Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands climbed 32 percent. GM plans to keep those four brands and is phasing out Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer. It has sold Saab.
Much of GM's sales increase was due to demand for large new wagons such as the Chevrolet Equinox, which jumped 133 percent.
Chrysler, meanwhile, said its February sales rose half a percent, its first year-over-year monthly increase since December of 2007. Chrysler's minivan sales rose, as did sales of its sedans.

Ford Sales Up February-2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid-

Ford deliveries jumped 43 percent to 142,285 vehicles compared with 141,951 for GM. The Dearborn, Michigan-based company hadn’t topped GM in domestic sales since a strike idled the biggest U.S. automaker almost 12 years ago, and the last time before that was during a 1970 walkout, based on Ford data.

Kia Ray Hybrid Sedan Concept Auto Show

Kia Motors America took the wraps off the Ray concept at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. There’s no denying the show car reveals a decidedly sportier side of Kia, the likes of which we’ve not previously seen (although the Forte Koup and the 2011 Sonata have definitely shown some flair). But beyond its sleek body, the Ray plug-in hybrid sedan is also proof that Kia is continuing to make strides with its EcoDynamics sub-brand, the goal of which is to “develop innovative fuel-stretching and emissions-cutting technologies.” Kia says the Ray concept “demonstrates a prospective plug-in hybrid vehicle configuration.”
